Next 14-15 June 2018 the LUISS School of Government will host a conference on "Africa-Europe relationship: a multi-stakeholder perspective":
Convener: Raffaele Marchetti
The conference will examine the plurality of socio-economic and political interactions underpinning the relationship between Africa and Europe. In particular, it aims to identify and discuss patterns of cooperation and recurrent obstacles in the African-European multi-stakeholder dynamics.
The conference intends to study the ongoing dynamics between the two continents by adopting a pluralist understanding of international relations which encompasses non-state actors as well as states. Traditionally the focus of the studies on Africa and Europe has been almost entirely put on government-to-government interaction. The current reality is way more complex and needs to be analyzed with the right lenses in order to be fully understood. The conference will thus look at a plethora of different actors, including firms, banks, private regulators, NGOs, religious organizations, think tanks and research centers, migrants’ organizations, terrorist groups, intellectuals and artists, and security operators. Particularly important in this context is to analyze the role played by transnational networks and hybrid coalitions. Together with this non-state actor perspective, the conference will also discuss the intergovernmental relations both in their bilateral and multilateral format, as well as in their interregional interaction (e.g., EU-ECOWAS). Only by taking into account both traditional governmental relationships and innovative multi-stakeholder interactions can a more accurate understanding of the current and future path of cooperation between Africa and Europe be developed.
Particular (but not exclusive) attention will be put on the following dimensions:
- Culture and art
- Technological innovation
The best papers will be included in an edited volume for the Routledge series World Politics and Dialogues of Civilizations (subject to approval)
