Giulio Venneri

Giulio Venneri is Policy Officer at the Enlargement Directorate of the European Commission. In June 2010 he was awarded a PhD (with honours) by the School of International Studies at the University of Trento. His dissertation examined EU member-statebuilding policies in Bosnia and Herzegovina. As part of his PhD research, he was visiting-scholar at the Brussels School of International Studies (University of Kent) and the Buffett Centre for International Comparative Studies at Northwestern University (Chicago, USA). He worked as expert on multilateral political cooperation and security affairs at the ‘Global Challenges Unit’ of the Italian Foreign Ministry, where he also carried out coordination activities within the framework of the Italian Presidency of the G8-2009. Venneri has been project coordinator at the Italian Institute for Asia and the Mediterranean (ISIAMED), where he led a research team on Kazakhstan. Previously, he supervised Middle-East cooperation programs for ‘La Sapienza’ University of Rome and UNESCO, and he carried out research projects at the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), the Italian Foreign Trade Ministry, and the Military Centre for Strategic Studies at the Italian Defence Ministry (CeMiSS). Active in civil society organizations, he has completed a five-year mandate as executive director of the European Association for International Studies (AESI). Currently he is the Italian national coordinator for the Phoenix Institute Foundation.
